Stevens Institute of Technology is a private research university located in Hoboken, New Jersey. Founded in 1870, the university has over 6,100 undergraduate and graduate students and more than 350 faculty members.

Overcoming the Forgetting Curve

Like any degree-granting institution, Steven’s Institute faced a common challenge of learning retention among their students. Throughout the semester, a plethora of information gets shared with students in all their courses, but not all that knowledge sticks with the students. In fact, within 24 hours of the end of a course, up to 70% of what a student has learned online or in-person is forgotten! Professors are often forced to give up valuable time at the beginning of the semester, reviewing information previously covered trying to get everyone up to speed.

Robert Zotti, Assistant Dean and Director at Steven’s Institute, began searching for ways to overcome this challenge by looking for a learning reinforcement tool.

Introducing BoosterLearn

As Robert was searching for a learning reinforcement tool, he and his organization outlined two main goals. The first goal was to find a tool that could reinforce core concepts from previous courses to help students absorb the material. Secondly, they were searching for ways to connect with online students and inject additional value to their learning experience.

Steven’s Institute partnered with BizLibrary to deploy BoosterLearn to solve this challenge of learning retention.

Not only did the technology prove itself to be exactly what they were looking for, but the additional support of BizLibrary’s Client Success team was the cherry on top. With regularly scheduled meetings and open communication, the partnership between BizLibrary and Robert has proven itself to be very valuable.

BoosterLearn in Action

The professors at Steven’s Institute use BoosterLearn for their classes by creating several questions they want to focus on at the beginning of the semester and deciding what cadence they want their questions delivered to students. From there, the questions are distributed, and students receive their boosts delivered directly to their email inbox.

Boosts can be quizzes, surveys, polls, or reflective questions that help the students recall core concepts.

Insightful Results

Once implemented, the professors at Steven’s Institute began to see the value in a learning reinforcement tool.

“The instructors would get data they have never ever had before!” -Robert Zotti

With the new data being received by professors, they were able to gain deeper insight on what core concepts students understood and which required more clarity.

Steven’s Institute introduced BoosterLearn to students as a voluntary program. By leaving the choice up to the student, professors could see who was engaged based on who was participating in the program.

Overall, Steven’s Institute utilizes BoosterLearn at their institution to reinforce core concepts and uses the data received to make necessary adjustments throughout the semesters. BoosterLearn is a learning reinforcement tool that can be used by organizations of all industries.
